Looking to level up your short game — and lower your handicap — in 2026? Adding shot-stopping spin to the ball on short-game shots is achieved in two ways. Here’s how to do it.

Accelerate through impact

The first mistake golfers make when trying to create speed is decelerating through impact. This typically happens because they make a backswing that’s too long for the shot they’re trying to hit, forcing them to slow down through impact. Start by making a smaller backswing and then accelerating through the ball.

Increase spin loft

Spin loft is the difference between your angle of attack and the loft of the clubface at impact. Feeling like you are hitting down on the ball is a great way to get the proper angle of attack to create spin.

However, many recreational players go wrong when doing this by closing the clubface and de-lofting the club. Not good for spin. Loft is your friend.

All-new RTZ Wedges are made with Z-Alloy, a completely new steel formula that enables a zero-compromise design approach for incredible feel, better durability, and more consistency for our best performing tour Wedges yet. Plus, there’s an all-new ADAPT grind featuring full-face grooves, to give RTZ Wedges more versatility than ever before.
Z-Alloy
Z-Alloy is a brand-new steel with better feel. It’s softer, lighter, and remarkably durable. It gives RTZ Wedges superior feel, better forgiveness, and more consistency. On RTZ Tour Rack Wedges, Z-Alloy’s rust-resistant properties ensure longer-lasting, like-new performance.
HydraZip
HydraZip is a unique system of face blasts and laser-milled lines formulated to maximize spin performance under wet conditions. This technology is dynamically configured by loft groupings, which helps balance spin across lofts, while maximizing spin in adverse conditions.
ZipCore
This low-density core technology replaces heavier material in the heel and hosel area with a lightweight, low-density, vibration-dampening material. This proprietary core allows us to shift the Center of Gravity closer to where you strike the ball, while simultaneously adding MOI.
UltiZip
UltiZip’s sharper grooves cut through grass and debris at contact, while deeper grooves help make space for grass, sand, dirt, or water to clear the impact zone, giving RTZ Wedges stronger, more consistent spin from the fairway, rough, or bunker.

FORGED FEEL
Incredible feel is a must for having a great wedge game. MG5 has been forged from soft carbon steel and designed with geometry to provide excellent feel with great feedback.
MAXIMUM SPIN
MG5 uses all-new, more aggressive grooves designed to maximize spin. Saw-milled grooves produce tighter tolerances allowing engineers to design steeper walls and sharper radii intended to maximize spin in both dry and damp conditions.
PERFORMANCE IN ALL CONDITIONS
RAW face with Spin Tread technology channels away moisture to help retain spin. The same way that tire treads help your car stay connected to the road, laser-etched channels redirect water at impact and creates more friction between the club face and golf ball to maintain spin in wet conditions.
CRAFTSMANSHIP MEETS CONSISTENCY
Crafted by hand and then milled to perfection. Each wedge and sole grind are precision-milled to eliminate the natural human error that comes with hand polishing. Our grinds deliver unmatched consistency and craftsmanship that players can count on every time.
CHARCOAL FINISH
MG5 debuts a sleek, sophisticated charcoal finish that reduces glare and enhances its aesthetic appeal in the bag.

At the core of the CBZ Wedge is Z-Alloy, a revolutionary new steel formula developed exclusively by Cleveland Golf. Lighter, softer, and built for performance, Z-Alloy provides golfers with an unrivaled feel at impact. In fact, CBZ Wedges are 25% softer than the previous CBX 4 ZipCore models, while maintaining the durability and responsiveness expected from Cleveland Golf’s tour-trusted Wedges.
Greater Forgiveness, Greater Consistency
CBZ Wedges are built with the same performance-driven DNA as the acclaimed RTZ Wedge, incorporating technologies like ZipCore, which repositions the Center of Gravity closer to the impact zone for improved MOI, control, and spin.
To further elevate performance, CBZ Wedges also feature UltiZip grooves for cleaner contact and consistent spin through turf and debris, while HydraZip face technology enhances spin in wet or challenging conditions, both optimized by loft for balanced results across the set. Finally, a redesigned Gelback TPU insert, now 94% larger, helps dampen vibrations and delivers a smoother, more responsive feel, even on mishits.

What do amateur golfers get wrong? Well, depending on the level of amateurism, the answer, according to some of the game’s best teachers, is a lot.

While some might make etiquette mistakes, others could commit swing errors. Or maybe they don’t practice enough. Or practice the right way. Or play the course the right away. You get the picture.

Over the last few days, some of the greatest minds in golf converged at Cabot Citrus Farms in Florida, learning, networking, presenting and shooting content for GOLF Magazine and GOLF.com.

Our Claire Rogers was on-site and spent some time asking a handful of teachers one question and seeking a quick-hitting answer: What’s one thing amateur golfers need to stop doing?

Check out their answers (and the video) below. And to find a Top 100 Teacher near you, click here.

1 thing amateurs need to stop doing

“Thinking on the golf course about your swing.” — Maureen Farrell

“Jumping around from coach to coach. Find a PGA professional or a good coach in your area that’s got your best interest at heart that you can partner with in your own improvement.” — Jason Baile

“Stop moving around when other people are playing.” — Cathy Kim

“Watching YouTube videos at 2 o’clock in the morning.” — Kelan McDonagh

“Playing from tees that don’t match your playing ability.” — Stef Shaw

“Trying to be perfect.” — Zach Haynes

“Trying to do it themselves. I know it’s a DIY society but honestly, I’m among the best coaches in the world right now, find one of them, work closely with them and have market growth over time.” — Jake Thurm

Welcome to Play Smart, a regular GOLF.com game-improvement column that will help you become a smarter, better golfer.

Your wedges are your scoring clubs. When you have one in your hand from the fairway, you should be thinking birdie. And when you have to grab a wedge greenside, it’s all about getting up-and-down for par. If you can increase your conversion rate in both scenarios, you’ll quickly see your scores drop.

But despite how important the wedges are to low scoring, lots of recreational golfers have no clue what the proper technique is for hitting them. When they head to the range, it’s all about gripping it and ripping it — there’s little thought given to the short clubs.

This lack of attention in practice sessions often leads to bad habits, and with them, higher scores. But if you know what kinds of mistakes you should be avoiding, hitting crisp wedges becomes much easier.

In the video below, Dr. Greg Rose from the Titleist Performance Institute shares two huge mistakes he often sees recreational golfers make with their wedges that reduces spin. Correct them and you’ll hit shots with more spin in no time.

Every golfer wants to be able to backspin their ball like a tour player, but don’t understand how to optimize the physics in their favor.

Two of the biggest mistakes we see amateurs make with wedges is decelerating and de-lofting the club into impact.

This reduces the two… pic.twitter.com/I3sQ8fIoUk
— TPI (@MyTPI) October 3, 2025

2 ways to add spin

Wedges are crucial for scoring because they can access hard-to-reach pin locations, allowing you to stuff the ball close to tucked hole locations. That’s largely thanks to how much spin they produce.

When you can put spin on a wedge, you can hit it high and land it soft. Plus, you can stop the ball on a dime when the situation calls for it. Simply put, knowing how to properly put spin on the ball can unlock your scoring ability.

Putting spin on the ball is achieved in two ways. One is speed through impact (i.e. clubhead speed) and the other is high spin loft, which is the difference between attack angle and the loft of the clubface at impact.

1. Accelerate through impact

The first mistake golfers make when trying to create speed is decelerating through impact. This typically happens because they make a backswing that is too long for the shot they’re trying to hit, so they slow down through impact to keep the ball from screaming past the flag. If you really want to create spin, you’ve got to start by making a smaller backswing and accelerating through impact.

“For wedges, if you want the ball to backspin, I need speed through the bottom,” Rose says. “Make sure you release and increase your clubhead speed.”

2. Increase spin loft

The other mistake golfers make when trying to generate spin is not creating enough spin loft. As outlined above, spin loft is the difference between your angle of attack and the loft of the clubface at impact.

Feeling like you are hitting down on the ball is a great way to get the proper angle of attack to create spin. However, where many recreational players go wrong is that when doing this, they close the clubface and de-loft the club.

“The key here is feel like you’re swinging down, but make sure you’re adding loft,” Rose says. “If you look at great wedge players, not only are they creating a downward attack angle, [but] the face is also open.”

I’ve played muni golf all my life. I was never a country-club kid and even the courses I practiced at in high school were rough around the edges. Range balls with worn-down dimples. Putting greens that looked like shag carpet. That was the norm.

These less-than-ideal conditions forced me to learn how to hit some shots that I otherwise wouldn’t have. Lobs off hardpan. Chips out of divots. Putts through craters on the greens. You get the picture.

By the time I started working in golf and got access to nicer practice facilities, I’d taught myself quite a few handy shots. However, after all those years, one shot still eluded me: the short-sided bunker shot from firm sand.

Luckily for me, one of our Top 100 Teachers, Joe Plecker, grew up as a muni kid himself. And when I approached him wanting to know more about how to properly execute this shot, he was quick to teach me his secrets.

An easy technique for an impossible shot

When I faced a short-sided bunker shot from hard sand, I always got sick to my stomach. I knew I was either going to skid the club into the back of the ball or overcorrect and catch too much sand and leave it in the bunker.

With hard sand, it’s important to get a steep angle of attack to get the clubhead to enter the sand and blast the ball out. But when you do this, it can be easy to get the leading edge stuck and catch too much sand.

To execute the shot properly, Plecker suggests setting up in two parts. First, you want a setup that promotes a steep angle of attack. Second, you want to grip the club in a way that ensures an open clubface.

For the first element, Plecker says to set up with your upper body tilted toward the target.

“This upper body forward position is going to help us maintain a very steep angle [of attack],” Plecker says.

After that, it’s time to place your hands on the grip. Plecker likes to see a very neutral grip with the lead hand for this.

“I want to see your lead hand in a neutral position,” Plecker says. “Imagine your left hand is pointed right down the top line of the grip. That’s your finesse position, meaning it’s a heck of a lot easier from there to twist the club open.”

From here, all you’ve got to do is focus on twisting and hinging the club to the top. Don’t feel like you are making a bid, full-body turn.

“This is the secret to hitting a finesse bunker shot,” Plecker says. “The first move is to cast that club.”

If you do it correctly, the club will carve into the sand and pop the ball up and out of the bunker.

Bunkers can be scorecard killers for recreational golfers. While pros and high-level players make escaping the sand look easy, for weekend hacks it’s anything but.

For lots of high-handicappers, just getting out of the sand is cause for celebration. But if you really want to become a stick, you’ve got to learn not only how to escape, but to give yourself a reasonable chance at making your ensuing putt, too.

The problem recreational golfers face with bunker shots is either typically a lack of understanding of the proper technique. Sure, many of them are familiar with the basic tenets (open clubface, hit behind the ball, etc.) but in practice they still are making critical errors.

Heck, I struggle with this, too. While I do know how to hit a proper bunker shot, sometimes I still struggle to execute correctly.

Luckily, GOLF Top 100 Teacher Joe Plecker showed me a trick that makes hitting bunker shots a breeze. Check it out below.

This hack fixed my bunker game

In the past, when I lined up to hit a bunker shot, I gripped the club like I normally would. However, this turned out to be a huge mistake.

With a neutral (or even strong) grip, I was making it far too easy to close the clubface as I approached impact.

“That is the worst thing you can do in a bunker release is close the clubface,” Plecker says.

To combat against this, Plecker suggested weakening my lead-hand grip by rotating it more toward the target. With my hand pre-rotated in this direction, it made it harder to shut the clubface — and dig the leading edge — in the sand.

“If you were really struggling with your bunker shots and were closing the club too much,” Plecker says. “The easiest thing you can do is move that [lead] hand across the club, get it a little more in that weak position and make sure you can’t close the clubface.”

If you do that, you’ll find that popping your ball out of the bunker becomes a breeze.

Welcome to Play Smart, a regular GOLF.com game-improvement column that will help you become a smarter, better golfer.

When a pro makes contact with the ball with an iron or wedge, you’ll notice they always have some forward lean in the shaft. This is a product of getting their hands in front of the ball at impact, allowing them to make ball-first contact.

This is something that all recreational golfers should strive for. If you want to get the most out of your ball striking, you’ve got to be able to produce forward shaft lean — which reduces your dynamic loft — and hit down on the ball.

In the quest for this “hands-forward” look at impact, though, many recreational golfers make a major mistake that actually hurts their ball-striking in the long run. GOLF Top 100 Teacher Joe Plecker explains more in the video below.

    <div id="parone-video--five" class="inline-video inline-video--inline preroll-video-container"

                                data-dockable="true"
                    data-autoplay="true"
                    data-key1="Instruction"

What you’re getting wrong about shaft lean

Getting forward shaft lean at impact is great, but you can’t get too obsessed with feeling like your hands are pressed toward the target through impact. If you do, it will hurt your release pattern and create poor contact.

To properly create forward shaft lean, your hands don’t just need to work toward the target, but they also need to work up and around your body.

“[The handle] is moving in as well as forward,” Plecker says. “And that’s so important for getting shaft lean.”

That’s not to say getting your hands forward at impact isn’t important, but it’s only one part of the equation. As you go through impact, you have to also allow the handle of the club to work up and around your body to produce a proper release pattern.

“That has a major influence on maintaining the shaft lean and on reducing the loft of the golf club,” Plecker says.

So, next time you feel like you’re not getting enough forward shaft lean at impact, don’t just think about getting your hands pressed more toward the target. If you want to de-loft the club properly, you also need to allow your hands to work up and around your body as you turn through the ball.

Welcome to Play Smart, a regular GOLF.com game-improvement column that will help you become a smarter, better golfer.

If you’re anything like me, you’d much prefer a right-to-left putt to one that breaks in the opposite direction. I feel abundantly more confident when I’ve got a putt that hooks rather than cuts.

When recreational players step up to these left-to-righters (assuming the golfer is right-handed), there’s a good chance you can predict how they’re going to miss the putt, and that’s low and past the hole. According to instructor Kelan McDonagh, this low and long miss is the most common among the students he teaches.

“In general,” McDonagh says. “We under-read putts and overhit them.”

                    data-autoplay="true"
                    data-key1="Putting"
                    data-window-url="https://live-golf-ps-clone.pantheonsite.io/instruction/putting/left-to-right-putts-play-smart/">

This miss pattern will not only ensure you don’t make many left-to-righters, but will also lead to tons of three-putts. When the ball gets below the break line (i.e., starts missing on the low side of the cup), the ball will continue getting further and further away from the hole.

Ideally, you want the ball to be getting closer to the hole as it loses speed. And the best way to do this is by keeping the ball on the high side of the cup for as long as possible.

“Generally, what we’re trying to do with the recreational golfer is get them to see more break,” McDonagh says, “because as the ball slows down, gravity is going to take it in the direction of the slope.”

Armed with this information, you can make two key adjustments to become more successful when facing left-to-right putts.

1. Play more break than you initially may think. And 2. Don’t hit the putt quite so hard.

When you do this, you’ll keep the ball above the fall line longer, which means that as the ball loses speed, it will get closer and closer to the hole. Do that and you’ll three-putt less often and maybe even make a few from distance.

Welcome to Play Smart, a regular GOLF.com game-improvement column that will help you become a smarter, better golfer.

To generate your maximum power, you’ve got to know how to properly shift your weight during the swing. Of all the intricate movements composed in a golf swing, the weight shift is among the most important.

The thing about a proper weight shift that most recreational golfers fail to grasp is that it should start back toward the target before you even finish the backswing. This move — commonly referred to as re-centering — is seen in the swing of every high-level player, regardless of how the rest of their swing looks.

Think of it in terms of a baseball player making a swing. As the ball approaches the plate, they take a small step toward the mound as they turn their torso and make a “backswing.” This helps create separation between the upper and lower body as you coil them in opposite directions, which creates tons of potential energy ready to be unleashed.

If you want to maximize the power in your swing, you’ve got to add this move. And for help learning the feel of this move, instructor Joe Plecker has a great drill he demonstrates in the video below.

How to feel proper weight shift

Plecker, a GOLF Top 100 Teacher, explains that he likes to teach moves in the golf swing with dynamic exercises. One such drill, which he learned on a visit to Korea earlier this year, is a modified version of the “step-swing” drill.

For this routine, all you need is an alignment stick or an old shaft that you can whip around with ease. Grip it like you would for a normal swing, and then take a stance.

“What I like to do is start out with the club a little bit in front of me,” Plecker says. “Then I’ll swing back and swing my lead leg behind my trail leg, swing back fully this time and then through.”

You should hear a whoosh sound when you swing through the impact zone. Once the club gets to the finish position, draw it back again and whip the stick back as you take your lead leg and stagger it back behind your trail leg.

“What I’m getting is a separation of the two halves of my body,” Plecker says. “The lower half is going forward while the upper half is going back.”

When you do this, you are creating that “coil” that can be unleashed on the downswing and generate tons of clubhead speed.

“What you’ll feel is that it really does start to become a cadence, a rhythm,” Plecker says. “Doing it two, three, four five times in a row, you’ll sort of find your rhythm or best pace that you can control the motion in.”

Do this routine a few times, and then pick up a club and make some swings, making sure you keep that feeling of shifting your weight toward the target before you complete the backswing. As you start to master this feel, you’ll notice that you can generate clubhead speed much more effortlessly and should see longer drives.

Welcome to Play Smart, a regular GOLF.com game-improvement column that will help you become a smarter, better golfer.

One key for hitting longer drives is getting an optimal angle of attack with the big stick. While your angle of attack will be negative for most clubs, when it comes to the driver, you want to be hitting more up on the ball.

Now, how much you swing up on the ball will differ from person to person and swing to swing. And the faster you swing, the less you’ll need to swing up on the ball to generate distance.

According to GOLF Top 100 Teacher Dave Phillips in the video below, PGA Tour pros have an average angle of attack of about +1 with the driver, while for LPGA pros that number is closer to +4. The reason for this discrepancy is that the LPGA pros are swinging slower, so they need to hit up on the ball more to generate the distance they need.

Hitting up on the ball isn’t always as easy as it sounds. For lots of recreational golfers, thinking about swinging up on the ball causes them to hang back and fail to transfer their weight properly, which leads to some serious issues.

To guard against this, you need to copy the key move that pros use to hit up on the ball properly. Phillips explains the move below starting at the 5:00 mark.

The key move for positive AoA

To practice this key move, make a backswing to the top and then stop. From here, you want to slightly “bump” your hips forward and then begin to rotate to initiate the downswing.

As the downswing begins, push into the ground with your lead foot. This will start the chain reaction that helps you properly hit up on the ball.

“You’ll see this lead shoulder move away from the chin, which gets the club down in front of [the body], and then as they push, you’ll see the lead shoulder work up and back,” Phillips says. “And the grip end of the club works up and in, which gets the clubhead to work around. This is the correct way to hit up on the ball.”

When you use the lead leg correct to push into the ground, you’ll be forced to pull your lead shoulder up and away from the ball. And in doing this, you not only will properly shift your weight forward, you’ll also create a positive angle of attack when coming into impact.

“You’ve gotta get your force into that lead foot early,” Phillips says. “Then once you feel like you can push yourself backwards because you’ve got enough force in that lead foot, you want to feel like you push and get the lead shoulder working more up and around you.”

If you can implement this key move into your swing, you’ll create a higher angle of attack in the correct manner, which will lead to longer drives.

Welcome to Play Smart, a regular GOLF.com game-improvement column that will help you become a smarter, better golfer.

So, you want to become a more consistent golfer? It all starts with the fundamentals.

There’s a reason coaches are always harping on fundamentals. They’re the foundation for a solid golf swing, and if you don’t have a solid foundation, you’ll never be able to play consistent golf.

These basics are not “sexy” nor are they the most exciting things to work on. But if you dedicate yourself to learning them the right way, you’ll be well on your way to a much more sound golf game.

One such fundamental that is crucial is your setup, and in the video below, LPGA teaching professional Gia Liwski explains how you can find the best possible setup position for your swing.

How to find the right setup position

When finding the best setup position for your swing, it’s important to note that it will look a little bit different for everyone. Just like most things in the swing, there’s no one-size-fits all position that will work for everyone.

To find the position that is best for you and your body type, Liwski suggests doing a simple test. First, stand tall with your arms dangling and your hands flat on the front of your upper thigh. Now, start to push your hinge at the waist and start to push your hips back as your hands slide down the front of your legs.

Once your fingertips reach the top of your knees, stop and start to move your weight forward onto the balls of your feet. It should feel almost like you are getting ready to dive into a pool.

“This is gonna be especially important with your irons,” Liwski says. “It’ll get your shoulders turning a little steeper and get the club working steeper, which is what we want with the irons.”

From this position, you will be in a great position to put a solid swing on the ball and create crisp, ball-first contact.

By doing this test, you’ll soon find that your setup position may look a little different than your playing partners. Because of our body types, the amount we need to hinge forward will differ slightly from person to person. The key is finding the position that allows your arms to dangle freely in front of you while leaving the correct amount of room to make a solid and consistent swing.
